Empowering Women Every Day
Empowering Women Every Day
We offer an array of support services throughout the mentoring process. Women are assisted from the time of release and engaged in workshops to establish and achieve goals; and reconnecting with positive members of family that are willing to aid in the reentry process.
Our agency offers training, job search and placement. Our training is focused in the hospitality field where they are able to get certified in four areas. Employability skills are enhanced and strengthened through this process
We advocate for fair treatment of women involved in the criminal justice system. We aim to inspire economic, and social systems and institutions to care and serve each person equally. We work to reunite families that have separated because of incarceration.
Money management workshops is intertwined throughout our program to ensure that everyone is able to improve money management knowledge and skills. This is a key component because we recognize that a great deal of the unhealth choices that resulted in incarcerations are a result of financial hardship. Our effort is to build financial stability and break the cycle of poverty.
Sisters has helped me reconnect with my family. First of all, they paved a road for me by showing me ways to live a stable life. My family seeing me more stable, doing something every day, and staying clean made them start trusting me again.
Before I was released from Muncy, I started writing Sisters Returning Home. When I was released, they met me and helped me learn how to get around and provided me a lot of resources. I am most grateful for their help with my interstate transfer. There were so may steps that I became really discouraged and people at Sisters encouraged me. They had me focus on building my skills while I waited for parole to let me know my interstate transfer was approved. If I didn't have the mentor at Sisters I don't know if things would have worked out so great.
Creative - Those of us who were fortunately enough to make it to School House Ln., had an individualized plan designed with our goals.
Compassionate - They offer specific groups that deal with a myriad of betrayal, disappointments and trauma that previously incarcerated women have faced.
Caring - the staff work to guide you in a direction that is most healthy for you. They work to connect you to long term relationships that are healthy and positive. They give you resources in your community when you get your apartment and so much more.
Sisters is what every woman needs when they have been away long enough for love one to die and the world to have changed while you serve your time.
The Money Management group talked about topics that were a big struggle for me. The information gave me clarity on how to spend and save money and get my credit cleaned up.
After I started working I was able to open a bank account and start cleaning my credit report up. I did a lot of stuff just to have a place to lay my head, so my dream is to have my own house some day. I am so grateful for all the help, information and resources they gave me.
After 12 yrs. down I had no real support and every program I reached out to was designed for men. During my last violation, I was visited by Ms. Peggy and she gave me hope. Sisters helped me get my state ID, SS card, clothes, shoes; they put a resume together with the skills I learned when I was down, which was crazy for me, and they gave me transportation to my job interviews. Now I'm working and I stay connected to the program to pay it forward for other women coming out.
Don't judge the book by the cover is what I think about when I think about Sisters Returning Home staff. This group of women will address any situation that comes up. When a lot of us come home there is no place for us to go. What people don't realize is that prison changes you, and when you have lived you life different from a lot of other you need to have a safe place to talk. Sisters provides that, we meet up once a month on the 3rd Saturday.
The number of women in prison increased by 646% between 1980 and 2010. Including women in local jails, more than 205,000 women are now incarcerated. When they are released, they all too often find themselves without support, resources or guidance. But for the women of Sisters Returning Home, they are not without hope.
More than 75% of prisoners released from the U.S. prison system are arrested for a new crime within 5 years. If we are to reduce recidivism for our returning citizens, they need continuous support and mentoring throughout the early stages of their release. Sisters Returning Home is here to empower and support women through the process of transitioning back into society.
